I was there as well, I was 18 at the time. Holy SHIT what a concert! Being a HUGE Van Halen fan (saw them in '79 at the CU Balch Fieldhouse in Boulder CO) we waited around for VH....and waited....and waited. We waited SO long, 1/2 the 400,000+ people had already left, when FINALLY VH came on....aaaaand DLR was so f$cking drunk he couldn't remember the words to half the songs. He made a big show of opening a new bottle of Jack (with butler wearing white gloves and silver platter etc.), and proceed to get MORE hammered. You could tell the entire band was PISSED at him....and later fired him. We found out later that the reason VH was so (hours) late taking the stage was that they had to try and sober DLR up...only for him to get absolutely wrecked onstage. It SUCKED, I never saw Van Hagar after that. VH was OVER. I agree that the Scorpions and Triumph stole the show, IMO, being also a huge Triumph fan (saw them at the Rose Bowl in '82). Quiet Riot was meh, Motley Crue SUCKED, their sound totally was FUBAR'd. Ozzy ROCKED, but Judas Priest Rocked MORE. All in all, an EPIC, legendary show. In fact, I just sent my buddy who's a huge Scorps' fan (and was born in Germany) a pic of my US Festival '83 t-shirt, still in great shape. Can you believe that next year it will have been FORTY f@cking YEARS??? Yikes! Oh well, still rocking it! Going to see Satriani again (for the millionth time) and Rammstein for the first time in San Antonio. Me and my buddy from Germany toyed with the idea of going to Germany to see Rammstein, since, well, he's a former native and all and of course speaks German fluently, but all the shows were sold out by the time we found out. Rock on Fellas!
I was down front for the Scorps and Halen. And when Roth took a swig of Jack, no bubbles were floating up. Plain as day cuz of the big screens. Fuckin Dave🤪
Yea what a day, it was on Sunday,been partying all weekend then on the way we found a hand water pump by the road ,we stopped to wash up & it turned into a party ,you could only imagine the rest of the day..😏
for my money, the Scorps blew ev1 off that stage that day/night. They had the prime bill time and the crowd was full tilt. By the time VH came on about 2 hours or more after Scorps left the stage, the crowd was way worn out. We stayed through the whole VH set and we didn't get home til 7:00am the next morning. It was a once in a lifetime event for me and damn, I'm glad we went. unforgettable.
